Contest ends August 31, 2006 or when all pixels
are sold - whichever comes first.

Those of you familiar with Vespatude.com are well aware of my battles with my Indonesian "restored" scooter. I have tried to make the most of my initial mistake by "re-restoring" the bike. The bottom line is that the engine just has too many issues. My Vespa needs a heart transplant.

Unfortunately, I don't have the cash to buy a new engine. I'm doing what I can to save a bit here and there, but it will take a while to get the $1600 or so for the 200cc engine I am after. I thought I'd try something weird and out of sync with my typical approach to things.

I figured I'd give everyone a chance to join in the project while giving a little bit back in the process. I decided on the pixel page. I'm selling pixels that will ultimately cover up the above picture of my Vespa. Check out the Million Dollar Homepage for an example. If I sell all of the pixels for a penny a piece, I will have the money I need to purchase my engine.

You can purchase a minimum of 1000 pixels for $10. That will give you a small spot to place an ad. The more pixels you purchase, the larger your ad! Of course, I will be promoting the page to bring as much traffic to view your ad as possible.

But wait! That's not all!

You could get $100 for participating! Yep, if all the pixels get sold, I will be awarding $100 to the ad buyer whose name is drawn from a special drawing. I will also have a mechanism in place that will allow random "surfers" who click through the different ads on the site to also take part in a $100 drawing.

Really, this is all in fun. I won't insult your intelligence by implying that you will buy pixels and millions of people will see your ad space. Sure, it is kind of neat to think that thousands could see it, but most likely you will buy pixels because you know what it feels like to twist the throttle and hear a well tuned two-stroke as it propels one of the most classic designs in history down the road.

  • What is a pixel?
  • For our purposes, a pixel is the smallest sample of a computer image. The picture to the left is made up of 160,000 pixels. The first ad, "Help me get a new engine!" represents 10,000 pixels.
  • So, how do I purchase pixels?
  • Click right here and send me your information. I'll contact you with directions for making payment through PayPal (or an agreed upon arrangement) and for getting me the ad. We'll have those pixels blocked out in no time!
  • How long will the ads be active?
  • The ads will be active for as long as there is a Vespatude.com. I'll be linking to the ads through the regular blog postings as well as a special link that will remain active indefinitely. There will be more exposure available through other sites I control and that exposure will end September 30, 2006.
  • Will I be able to tell how many people have clicked on my ads?
  • Yes, I will be tracking both page views and click-thrus. Page views will be the total views of the page from its inception. Page view information will be displayed here on the main page and will include all page views where ever the ads appear (ads may appear in several places). Click-thrus will be actual clicks made on your individual ad. This information will be available at the conclusion of the promotion - or upon request.
  • I don't want to purchase pixels, but I would like a chance at $100!
  • Then just start clicking on the ads! Several random clicks will cause a page to appear for you to give me your contact information. At the conclusion of the promotion a drawing will be taken from those names to award the $100 "click for cash" contest.
  • How will I know that I am a winner?
  • The drawings will take place within 7 days after all pixels have been sold. The winners of both the ad buyer's contest and the click thru contest will be notified by email. Upon confirmation the name of the winners will appear on this page. Checks made payable to the winners will be mailed by regular mail to the address provided the day the winner(s) name(s) appear on this page.
  • What are my chances that I could win the cash?
  • Chances of winning depend on the number of participants. Statistics will be available at the conclusion of the contest.
  • What happens if you don't sell all the pixels?
  • You wouldn't let that happen, now would you? The page will remain active until September 30, 2006 and pixels can still be purchased up to that time. However, the contest will end August 31, 2006. Any money collected up to that time and until September 31, 2006 will go into my savings fund for the purchase of my engine.
